Everything You Need to Know About Teaching Your Horse Lead Changes

0712_01

If you’ve ever wondered: How do I get my horse to take the correct lead? What exercises can I do to improve my horse’s canter? What is the best way to ask for a canter departure? How can I encourage my horse to be more responsive? How do I teach my horse to do a flying lead change? Clinton has the answer in his Leads and Lead Changes Series.

The series covers everything you need to know about teaching a horse a flying lead change, from covering the basics of a horse’s gaits to foundation-building exercises to fine-tuning lead changes for the highest levels of competition.

What’s on the Series:

Part One
Much of the frustration involved with lead changes can be nipped in the bud by thorough preparation. Clinton demonstrates in detail the foundation he puts on his horses before addressing the topic of lead changes and provides practical, must-do exercises to set your horse up for success.

Part Two
Working with three separate horses, Clinton demonstrates how to begin asking a horse to change leads. You’ll see the good, the bad and the ugly. No part of the horse’s learning process is hidden from the camera. This section also includes a student lesson in which Clinton helps a rider teach lead changes. The lesson provides valuable troubleshooting advice.

Part Three
Moving beyond the basics, Clinton explains how to progress and fine-tune a horse’s ability to change leads. He works with five horses that are more advanced in their training and offers fixes to common problems that are likely to crop up. By the end of the session, you’ll have the know-how to train your horse to change leads off a feather-light touch.

The Leads and Lead Changes Series is available to premium No Worries Club members or can be purchased on the Downunder Horsemanship e-store.
